Electric Cooktop Element Not Heating

One burner stays cold. You turn the knob, the light comes on, and the pan just sits there. Or the element glows for a minute, then quits. Meanwhile dinner is half-made and the other burners are crowded. It's a common failure on both coil cooktops and glass smoothtops, and the cause is usually one of a few things. Here's how we trace it.

What a dead element is actually telling you

Electric cooktops heat by pushing current through a resistance element. Something in that path is broken: the element itself, the connection feeding it, the switch that meters power, or the control board on newer smoothtops. The pattern matters. One cold burner while the rest work points at that burner's own parts. Two burners dead together often means a shared circuit or a lost leg of power at the panel. An element that heats then drops out is usually cycling on a bad switch or a heat limiter doing its job. Note whether the indicator light comes on. That one detail narrows things a lot.

The cheap causes we check first

On coil cooktops, the plug-in element is the first suspect. The prongs sit in a receptacle, and years of spills and heat cycles pit those contacts. A loose or burned receptacle makes a burner intermittent long before it dies. Elements themselves burn out, and they're a simple swap. Next up is the infinite switch behind the knob — the part that pulses power on and off. When contacts inside it wear, you get a burner that runs full blast, or not at all, no matter the setting. Smoothtops hide their elements under glass, so we work from the control side.

When the problem is power, not the cooktop

Ranges and cooktops run on a 240-volt circuit with two hot legs. Lose one leg and odd things happen: the oven bakes weakly, some burners work, others sit cold, the clock still glows. That's not a broken element. That's a tripped half of a double breaker, a loose lug, or a failing connection at the range cord or junction box. Try resetting the breaker firmly off, then on. If the pattern of dead burners doesn't change, tell us that. We'll bring meters and check the supply before we sell you any parts.

Safe checks you can do in five minutes

Swap a coil element with a matching one from a working burner. If the cold spot follows the element, you found it. If the spot stays put, the receptacle or switch is at fault. Look at the receptacle with a flashlight — black char or melted plastic is your answer. Wiggle the element in its socket; a burner that flickers on has a contact problem. Check the panel for a tripped breaker. Confirm the control lock isn't engaged on a smoothtop, and clear any error code from the display. Stop there. Don't remove the glass top, unscrew panels, or probe wiring. Call us if the checks don't sort it.

What we bring that a knob-twist can't

We de-energize the appliance, then measure. Element resistance tells us if the coil is open. Voltage at the switch terminals tells us whether the switch is passing power or holding it back. On smoothtops, we read the control board's output and check the heat limiter that shuts elements down when the glass overheats. We inspect terminal blocks for heat damage and check the supply on both legs. We source parts by model and serial, not by guess, and we test at every knob position before we button things up. Portland kitchens, older wiring, damp basements — we've seen the range of it.

Electric Cooktop Element Not Heating — quick answers

Can I keep cooking on the other burners?

Usually yes, if nothing smells hot and no plastic is melted. But if you saw sparks, char at a receptacle, or smelled burning, shut the breaker off and stop using the cooktop until it's inspected.

My burner glows red then goes out. Broken element?

Probably not. Elements that cycle are being switched off by something — a worn infinite switch, a heat limiter, or a control board issue. Full failures usually mean no glow at all, ever.

Is a cracked glass smoothtop worth repairing?

It depends on the crack and the model. Cracks let spills reach the wiring underneath, so we treat them as urgent. Call us with your model number and we'll talk through options.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Phone us or fill out the form. Describe the noise, the puddle, the burning smell. Brand and rough age help too. We ask a few questions so the right parts ride along in the van.

  2. Step 2

    We come look

A technician arrives in the window we set, pulls the unit out, and tests it. Tight basement stairs and low bungalow ceilings are normal to us. You hear what's wrong before anything is replaced.

  3. Step 3

    You decide, we repair

We explain the fix and what it involves, then wait for your go-ahead. Most common parts are on the truck. If one has to be ordered, we tell you the plan and follow up.

Why homeowners call us

  • Damp-house know-howPortland laundry rooms grow mildew. Basements stay wet. We know how moisture ruins dryer vents, rusts washer parts and shorts out control boards, so we check the surroundings, not just the machine, before calling a repair done.
  • Unhurried visitsRushed diagnostics miss things. We take the extra minutes to pull the panel, look behind the drum and test the drain line. Then we tell you plainly what failed and whether the repair makes sense for that appliance.
  • Every major brandWe are an independent shop, so we work on the whole laundry room and kitchen: washers, dryers, refrigerators, ranges, ovens, dishwashers, freezers and disposals. Older units and newer digital models both get the same careful look.
  • Wide service reachHomeowners across five Western states reach us the same way. City bungalow, suburban split-level or a house down a gravel road, we schedule a visit and show up with tools and common parts ready.
  • All major brands, gas & electricWhirlpool, Samsung, LG, GE, Maytag, Bosch, KitchenAid and more — as an independent repair company.
  • Straight answersIf it isn't worth repairing, we'll say so — often on the phone.
