Dryer Vent Cleaning
Your towels come out warm but still damp. You run the dryer twice. Maybe three times. The laundry room feels like a sauna afterward, and there's a musty smell that won't quit. Most of the time the dryer isn't broken. The vent behind it is packed with lint, and the machine has nowhere to push the wet air.

What a clogged vent slowly does to your dryer
Lint builds a felt lining inside the duct. Air slows. Moist air stays in the drum, so clothes take two cycles instead of one. That means double the run time on every part inside. The heating element or gas burner cycles more often. The motor runs hotter. The thermal fuse, which exists to shut things down when heat backs up, eventually blows. Then the dryer starts but never heats, and folks assume the machine died. Often it just suffocated. In our damp Portland houses the trapped moisture also feeds mildew in the laundry room walls and along baseboards.
The five-minute habit that prevents almost all of it
Pull the lint screen every single load. Not most loads. Every one. Once a month, hold that screen under running water. If water beads up and sits on top instead of pouring straight through, dryer sheet residue has sealed the mesh. Scrub it with a soft brush and a little dish soap, then let it dry fully. While you're back there, look at the flex duct behind the dryer. It should be a gentle curve, not a crushed accordion. Slide the dryer out a few inches so the duct isn't smashed against the wall. Vacuum the floor lint too.
How often the whole vent line needs cleaning
For an average household, once a year is a reasonable rhythm. Set it with something you already remember, like when you change smoke detector batteries. Clean more often if any of these apply: you have a long duct run that goes up through a wall or out the roof, your duct has several elbows, you dry pet bedding or heavy towels constantly, or you have a big family running loads daily. Those setups can need it every six months. Short runs that go straight out the wall behind the dryer stay cleaner longer. If you can't remember it ever being done, start now.
Signs prevention time has passed
Clothes hot to the touch but still damp at the end of a cycle. A cycle that used to take forty minutes now takes ninety. A burnt or scorched smell during drying. The top of the dryer getting uncomfortably hot. No visible lint or air movement at the outside vent hood while the dryer runs. The flapper on that hood staying shut. Excess heat and humidity filling the laundry room. Also check outside for a bird nest in the hood, which happens more than you'd think here in spring. Any of these, stop using the dryer until the line is cleared.
When to hand it to us
Some vent runs you simply can't reach with a brush from the laundry room. Roof terminations, second-floor runs, ducts buried in a crawlspace, or a hood you can't find at all. We come out, clear the full line, check the airflow at the outside hood, and look at whether the duct itself is the right material and routed sanely. Crushed foil duct and long sagging runs cause repeat clogs no matter how often they get cleaned. If your dryer already tripped a fuse and won't heat, that's a repair, and we handle that in the same visit. Call us and we'll get you scheduled.
Dryer Vent Cleaning — quick answers
Can I just clean it myself with a kit from the hardware store?
For a short, straight run out the back wall, often yes. Unplug the dryer first. Where DIY kits struggle is long runs, multiple elbows, and roof vents. If the brush won't reach the outside end, call us.
Does using dryer sheets make the clogging worse?
They leave a waxy film on the lint screen that blocks airflow even when the screen looks clean. The lint itself is what fills the duct. Wash the screen monthly and you solve most of the film problem.
My vent goes out the roof. Does that need cleaning more often?
Usually yes. Vertical runs work against gravity, so lint settles back down the duct. Roof hoods also attract nests and debris. Plan on checking that style of vent about every six months.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call us or fill out the form and describe what you're hearing, seeing or smelling. Brand and rough age help. We ask a few questions up front so the likely parts ride along in the van.
- Step 2
We come look
A technician shows up in the window we set, pulls the unit out and tests it. Tight basement stairs and low bungalow ceilings are ordinary to us. You'll hear what's wrong before anything gets replaced.
- Step 3
You decide, we repair
We walk you through the fix and what it involves, then wait for your go-ahead. Most common parts are already on the truck. If something has to be ordered, we tell you the plan and follow up.

Why homeowners call us
- Damp-house know-howPortland laundry rooms grow mildew and basements stay wet. We know what moisture does to dryer vents, washer parts and control boards, so before we call a repair done we look at the room around the machine too.
- Unhurried visitsA rushed diagnostic misses things. We take the extra minutes to pull the panel, look behind the drum and test the drain line. Then we tell you plainly what failed and whether fixing it makes sense on that appliance.
- Every major brandWe're an independent shop, so the whole kitchen and laundry room is fair game: washers, dryers, refrigerators, ranges, ovens, dishwashers, freezers and disposals. A twenty-year-old unit gets the same careful look as a new digital one.
- Wide service reachHomeowners in five Western states reach us the same way. City bungalow, suburban split-level, a house down a gravel road. We set a visit and arrive with tools and common parts ready.
- All major brands, gas & electricOne independent crew for Whirlpool, Samsung, GE, LG, Maytag, Bosch and more.
- Straight answersWhen a repair doesn't make sense, we tell you, sometimes before we even roll a truck.
