Dryer Runs But Never Gets Hot

The drum turns. The timer counts down. You come back an hour later and the towels are still cold and damp. Nothing smells burnt, nothing is beeping, and the dryer sounds perfectly normal. That's a frustrating one, because the machine seems fine. Heat and tumbling are two separate systems, and only one of them quit on you.

What "runs but no heat" actually tells us

Your dryer has a motor that spins the drum and a separate heat source, either an electric element or a gas burner. When the drum still turns, the motor and belt are fine. That's good news. It means we're looking at the heating side alone. In our damp Portland winters, that heating side works harder than it does most places, because the air it pulls in is already full of moisture. A dryer with weak airflow can also shut its own heat off on purpose to protect itself. So "no heat" sometimes means "too little air."

Cause family one: blocked airflow

Start here, because it's the cheapest and the most common. Lint packs into the vent hose, the wall duct, and the flap outside. Heat builds where it shouldn't. A safety thermostat senses that and cuts the heat, so the dryer keeps spinning with cold air. Crushed foil hose behind the machine does the same thing. So does a bird nest or matted lint in the outside hood. Laundry rooms in older bungalows often have long duct runs through a crawlspace, and those collect lint fast. Clear that path and heat sometimes returns on its own.

Cause family two: a tripped or failed safety part

Every dryer has small parts whose job is to kill the heat when something goes wrong. A thermal fuse is one. A high-limit thermostat is another. They're one-way switches in many models, so once they trip from an airflow problem, the dryer will tumble forever without warming up. Replacing one without fixing the blocked vent that killed it just buys a few weeks. On electric machines, a heating element can also break internally. On gas machines, the igniter or gas valve coils can quit. Those are inside panels, and that's technician territory.

Cause family three: power and settings

Electric dryers use two legs of 240-volt power. Lose one leg at the breaker and you get exactly this symptom: drum spins, no heat. Check that a double breaker didn't half-trip. Reset it firmly, both directions. Then check the obvious stuff nobody wants to admit to. Air Fluff, Air Dry, and No Heat cycles tumble cold by design. Delicates run cooler than you might expect. A child or a housemate may have nudged the dial. Gas dryers need the gas valve open too, though we'd rather you call than start tracing gas.

Safe checks you can do right now, and what we do next

Pull the dryer out gently. Look at the flex hose for kinks or crush. Go outside while it runs and feel for warm air at the vent hood. Weak or no flow points straight at a clog. Clean the lint screen and rinse it if fabric softener has glazed it. Try a plain Timed Dry on high heat. Stop there. We take it further with a meter, testing fuses, thermostats, elements, and igniters for continuity, then measuring exhaust temperature and airflow to confirm the fix holds. Call us and tell us what you found. It shortens the visit.

Dryer Runs But Never Gets Hot — quick answers

Can I keep using the dryer if it still spins?

We'd rather you didn't. If a blocked vent caused it, running the machine keeps stressing parts and traps lint near heat. Damp clothes also sit longer, which invites mildew. Unplug it or shut it off until it's checked.

Why did it work fine yesterday?

Safety parts fail suddenly, all at once, not gradually. Lint builds slowly for months, then one load tips it over the line. So a dryer can seem perfect right up to the day the heat cuts out.

Is a no-heat dryer worth repairing?

Often yes. Heating parts and thermostats are common repairs on machines of most ages. We look at the dryer's condition, the specific failure, and whether the drum, bearings, and motor are still sound before we recommend anything.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Phone us or fill out the form. Describe the noise, the puddle, the burning smell. Brand and rough age help too. We ask a few questions so the right parts ride along in the van.

  2. Step 2

    We come look

A technician arrives in the window we set, pulls the unit out, and tests it. Tight basement stairs and low bungalow ceilings are normal to us. You hear what's wrong before anything is replaced.

  3. Step 3

    You decide, we repair

We explain the fix and what it involves, then wait for your go-ahead. Most common parts are on the truck. If one has to be ordered, we tell you the plan and follow up.

Why homeowners call us

  • Damp-house know-howPortland laundry rooms grow mildew. Basements stay wet. We know how moisture ruins dryer vents, rusts washer parts and shorts out control boards, so we check the surroundings, not just the machine, before calling a repair done.
  • Unhurried visitsRushed diagnostics miss things. We take the extra minutes to pull the panel, look behind the drum and test the drain line. Then we tell you plainly what failed and whether the repair makes sense for that appliance.
  • Every major brandWe are an independent shop, so we work on the whole laundry room and kitchen: washers, dryers, refrigerators, ranges, ovens, dishwashers, freezers and disposals. Older units and newer digital models both get the same careful look.
  • Wide service reachHomeowners across five Western states reach us the same way. City bungalow, suburban split-level or a house down a gravel road, we schedule a visit and show up with tools and common parts ready.
  • All major brands, gas & electricWhirlpool, Samsung, LG, GE, Maytag, Bosch, KitchenAid and more — as an independent repair company.
  • Straight answersIf it isn't worth repairing, we'll say so — often on the phone.
