What "runs but no heat" actually tells us
Your dryer has a motor that spins the drum, plus a separate heat source, either an electric element or a gas burner. If the drum still turns, the motor and belt are fine, so we can leave that whole half alone and look at heat. In our damp Portland winters the heating side works harder than it does in drier places, since the air it pulls in already carries a lot of moisture. A dryer with weak airflow will also shut its own heat off on purpose to protect itself. So "no heat" sometimes really means "too little air."
Cause family one: blocked airflow
Start here. It's the cheapest thing to check and the one we find most. Lint packs into the vent hose, the wall duct, and the flap outside, and heat builds where it shouldn't. A safety thermostat senses that and cuts the heat, so the drum keeps spinning with cold air inside. Crushed foil hose behind the machine does the same thing, and so does a bird nest or matted lint in the outside hood. Laundry rooms in older bungalows often have long duct runs through a crawlspace, which collect lint fast. Clear that path and sometimes the heat comes back on its own.
Cause family two: a tripped or failed safety part
Every dryer has small parts whose only job is to kill the heat when something goes wrong. A thermal fuse is one, a high-limit thermostat is another. In many models they're one-way switches, so once an airflow problem trips them, the dryer will tumble all day without warming up. Replace one without fixing the blocked vent that killed it and you've bought a few weeks, no more. On electric machines the heating element can break internally. On gas machines the igniter or the gas valve coils can quit. Those live behind panels, and that's our end of the job.
Cause family three: power and settings
Electric dryers run on two legs of 240-volt power. Lose one leg at the breaker and you get this exact symptom, drum spinning with no heat. Check whether a double breaker half-tripped, and reset it firmly both directions. Then check the stuff nobody likes admitting to. Air Fluff, Air Dry, and No Heat cycles tumble cold by design, and Delicates runs cooler than most people expect. A housemate or a kid may have nudged the dial. Gas dryers need the gas valve open too, though we'd rather you call us than start tracing gas.
Safe checks you can do right now, and what we do next
Pull the dryer out gently and look at the flex hose for kinks or crushed spots. With it running, step outside and feel for warm air at the vent hood. Weak flow, or none, points straight at a clog. Clean the lint screen, and rinse it if fabric softener has glazed it over. Run a plain Timed Dry on high heat. Then stop. We take it from there with a meter, checking fuses, thermostats, elements, and igniters for continuity, and we measure exhaust temperature and airflow afterward so we know the fix will hold. We'd rather you didn't. If a blocked vent caused this, every load keeps stressing parts and holding lint near heat. Damp clothes sit around longer too, and that invites mildew. Unplug it or shut it off until someone looks at it.
Why did it work fine yesterday?
Safety parts fail all at once, not gradually. Lint, on the other hand, builds for months, and then one load tips it past the line. That's why a dryer can seem perfect right up to the day the heat stops.
