The independent appliance repair shop across the Pacific Northwest
Repair or Replace a Washing Machine
We repair washers, and the first thing we'll tell you is that most stopped-mid-cycle machines are worth fixing. Give us a call and we'll come look at it. Maybe yours quit with a wet load sitting in it, or it walks across the laundry room floor, or the drum smells like a damp basement no matter how many vinegar rinses you run. Either way, you're standing there wondering whether to fix it or buy new. Here's how we think it through.

Age matters, but not the way you think
There's no magic number where a washer becomes disposable. What matters is how it was built and how hard it worked. A basic top-loader with a simple transmission can run a long time, and parts for it stay common. A machine loaded with sensors and a touch screen has more things that can quit, and those boards get discontinued sooner. We also ask how many people live in the house. A washer running two loads a day in a family of six has aged faster than the calendar says. Age is one input. It's rarely the deciding one by itself.
The fault itself tells you most of the story
Some failures are routine. A worn drain pump, a broken lid switch, a cracked inlet valve, a clogged pressure hose that sends the water level haywire. Those are common, and they're contained. Fix the part and the machine goes back to normal life. Other failures reach deeper. A leaking outer tub seal or a failed bearing means pulling the machine most of the way apart, and on some designs the tub is sealed and can't be split at all. A rusted-through cabinet from a slow leak is another one. When the damage is structural, or spread across several systems, that changes the math.
Can we still get the part?
This is the quiet dealbreaker. A repair only works if the part exists. Control boards and specialty modules for older or discontinued models sometimes vanish from the supply chain, or show up only as used pulls with unknown history. We check availability before we recommend anything. If a part is backordered for weeks, we tell you that up front so you can decide whether to wait or move on. Mechanical parts (pumps, hoses, belts, switches) tend to stay available much longer than electronics. That's part of why simpler machines often stay repairable well past the point where a feature-heavy one doesn't.
What we're doing during the visit
We start by watching it fail. Run a cycle, listen to the fill, watch the drain, feel for vibration during spin. Error codes help, but they point at a symptom and not always the cause. A code for a drain fault might be a sock in the pump, a kinked hose, or a bad pump, and those are three very different outcomes. We check the level of the machine, the condition of the hoses, and whether the standpipe is backing up. Sometimes the washer is fine and the plumbing isn't. Then we tell you what we found, what it takes to fix, and whether we'd fix it ourselves.
Times we'll tell you to buy a new one
We say it when the honest answer is replace. If the tub bearing is gone on a sealed-tub design, the repair is close to rebuilding the machine. If the frame is rusted through from years of a slow leak in a humid laundry room, a new part won't fix a rotting cabinet. If the control board is discontinued and no reliable source exists, waiting isn't a plan. And if a machine has already needed three unrelated repairs in a short stretch, that pattern usually continues. We'd rather lose the job than have you call us again in two months. Reach us and we'll walk through it.

Repair or Replace a Washing Machine — quick answers
My washer shakes hard during spin. Is that a big repair?
Sometimes it's nothing. Check that all four feet sit firm on the floor and that the load isn't bunched to one side. If it's level and balanced and still bangs, that points to suspension or bearing wear, and we'd need to look at it.
Does a smelly washer mean something is broken?
Usually not. Front-loaders trap moisture in the door gasket and detergent drawer, especially in cool, damp laundry rooms. Wipe the gasket dry, leave the door ajar, run a hot clean cycle. Odor that sticks around can mean a clogged drain or sump.
Should I repair a washer if the dryer is the same age?
Not automatically. Dryers and washers fail for different reasons, often on different timelines. Judge each machine on its own fault. Replacing a working dryer just to match the new washer is money spent on appearance.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call us or fill out the form and describe what you're hearing, seeing or smelling. Brand and rough age help. We ask a few questions up front so the likely parts ride along in the van.
- Step 2
We come look
A technician shows up in the window we set, pulls the unit out and tests it. Tight basement stairs and low bungalow ceilings are ordinary to us. You'll hear what's wrong before anything gets replaced.
- Step 3
You decide, we repair
We walk you through the fix and what it involves, then wait for your go-ahead. Most common parts are already on the truck. If something has to be ordered, we tell you the plan and follow up.

Why homeowners call us
- Damp-house know-howPortland laundry rooms grow mildew and basements stay wet. We know what moisture does to dryer vents, washer parts and control boards, so before we call a repair done we look at the room around the machine too.
- Unhurried visitsA rushed diagnostic misses things. We take the extra minutes to pull the panel, look behind the drum and test the drain line. Then we tell you plainly what failed and whether fixing it makes sense on that appliance.
- Every major brandWe're an independent shop, so the whole kitchen and laundry room is fair game: washers, dryers, refrigerators, ranges, ovens, dishwashers, freezers and disposals. A twenty-year-old unit gets the same careful look as a new digital one.
- Wide service reachHomeowners in five Western states reach us the same way. City bungalow, suburban split-level, a house down a gravel road. We set a visit and arrive with tools and common parts ready.
- All major brands, gas & electricOne independent crew for Whirlpool, Samsung, GE, LG, Maytag, Bosch and more.
- Straight answersWhen a repair doesn't make sense, we tell you, sometimes before we even roll a truck.
