What the minerals actually do inside the machine
Hard water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium. When water gets heated or evaporates, those minerals stay behind as scale. In a dishwasher, scale coats the heating element and clogs the tiny spray arm holes. In a washer, it settles in the hoses and the drum. In a water heater, it piles up on the bottom like sand. Scale is a poor conductor of heat, so the element runs longer and hotter to do the same job. That extra heat and extra run time is what wears parts out early. Nothing breaks in one day. The habit that prevents most of it
Run a descaling cycle. That's it. For a dishwasher, empty it, put a cup of white vinegar or a packet of citric acid descaler in the bottom, and run the hottest cycle with no detergent. For a washing machine, use the tub clean setting with a descaler made for washers. While you're in there, pull the dishwasher's bottom rack and wipe the filter under the tap. Check that spray arm holes are clear — a toothpick works. None of this needs tools or panels off. Ten quiet minutes, and the heating element stays bare metal instead of wearing a mineral coat.
How often, honestly
In much of the Portland area our water is fairly soft, so every three or four months is plenty. But water varies a lot across the five states we cover, and well water can be very hard. If you see white crust on the kettle within a month, go monthly. A cheap test strip from a hardware store tells you where you stand. Rinse aid also helps in a dishwasher — it makes water sheet off instead of sitting in droplets that dry into spots. If your washer sits in a damp basement laundry room, leave the door ajar between loads so the drum dries.
Signs prevention is already behind you
Dishes come out gritty even after a descale cycle. The dishwasher runs long and dishes are still cool at the end — that points to an element buried in scale. A washer that won't fill quickly may have a clogged inlet screen. Listen for a water heater that pops and rumbles when it heats; that's water boiling under a sediment layer. Rust-colored streaks, a burning smell, or a machine that trips a breaker means stop using it and get it looked at. Give us a call and describe what you're hearing. When a whole-house fix makes sense
If you're descaling monthly and still fighting film, treat the water instead of the symptoms. A softener or a scale-reduction cartridge on the main line protects everything downstream — dishwasher, washer, water heater, coffee maker, faucets. That's plumbing work, not appliance work, so a plumber is your call there. What we can do is tell you whether scale is really the culprit in the machine you're worried about. We open it up, look at the element and the water paths, and show you what we find. Sometimes it's scale. Sometimes it's a pump or a valve, and softer water wouldn't have changed a thing.

Will vinegar hurt my dishwasher's rubber seals?
Occasional use is fine in most machines. Don't leave vinegar sitting overnight, and don't mix it with bleach. If your manual specifically warns against vinegar, use a citric acid descaler packet instead — it does the same job more gently.
Does hard water ruin the washing machine or just the clothes?
Both, in different ways. Minerals bind with detergent so clothes rinse poorly and feel stiff. Inside, scale collects on the heater and inlet screens, which makes fills slow and heating cycles longer than they should be.
Is a filter pitcher enough to protect appliances?
No. A pitcher only treats drinking water. Appliances draw straight from the supply line, so protection has to happen at the main line or through regular descaling cycles in each machine.
