Age is a clue, not a verdict
A dryer that's eight or ten years old isn't automatically done. Plenty of them run well past that with a new belt, a new thermal fuse, or a fresh set of rollers. What we watch for is a machine that's had several unrelated failures in a short stretch. That pattern usually means the whole assembly is wearing out together, and fixing one piece just moves the problem down the line. A younger dryer with one clear fault is almost always worth the repair. An older one with a tired drum, worn bearings, and a scorched cabinet is a different conversation. We'll tell you which one you have.
The type of fault matters more than the age
Some failures are simple and common. A blown thermal fuse, a broken belt, a door switch that no longer clicks, or a clogged vent that's choking airflow and cooking the heating element. Those are ordinary repairs on almost any dryer. Other faults sit deeper. A cracked drum, a seized motor, a rusted-through blower housing, or a control board on a model where the board is no longer made. Those change the math. Damp Portland laundry rooms are hard on sheet metal, and we do see rust take the bottom out of a cabinet. One clean fault usually means repair. Structural damage usually doesn't.
Can we still get the part?
This is the quiet one that decides a lot of calls. A dryer can be mechanically sound and still be unrepairable once the part has gone out of production. Older machines and short-lived model runs are where we hit this most. Belts, fuses, switches, and heating elements are widely available across most brands. Electronic control boards and molded plastic pieces specific to one model year are the ones that dry up. We check availability before we recommend anything, so you're not waiting weeks on a part that may never ship. What we actually do on the visit
We start by listening to you describe it. When did it change? Does it hum, click, thump, or go silent? Is the heat weak, or gone entirely? Then we test. Airflow at the outside vent hood, drum movement by hand, and heat behavior through a full cycle. We look at the vent run too, because a crushed or lint-packed duct causes many symptoms people blame on the dryer itself. Once we know the fault, we say plainly whether the repair makes sense. If it doesn't, we say that too. We'd rather you spend well than pay us to patch something twice.
When replacing honestly wins
There are cases where we tell people to shop. A drum with a crack that snags fabric. A cabinet rusted from years of a damp basement floor. A discontinued control board, or a motor and blower both failing at once on a dryer already well into its second decade. We'll also flag it if you've been stacking repairs. Three visits in two years on the same machine is a signal. Before you buy, check one thing yourself: pull the vent hose and look for a lint plug. Is it worth fixing a dryer that's part of a stacked laundry unit?
Usually yes, because replacing a stacked pair means replacing both halves and often the surrounding cabinetry. We'll check whether the washer side is healthy before recommending anything drastic.
How long does it take to know if it's repairable?
