An Appliance Keeps Tripping the Breaker
If a breaker keeps tripping on an appliance, unplug that appliance, leave the breaker off, and call us so we can find out whether the fault is in the machine or the wiring. Most people notice it like this: the dryer kicks on, the lights blink, and half the laundry room goes dark. You flip the breaker back and it holds a few minutes, then trips again. Maybe there's a faint hot smell. A breaker that trips is telling you something real. Here's what to check before you reset it one more time.

Do these things first, in this order
1. Unplug the appliance on that circuit, if you can reach the cord safely. 2. Reset the breaker once with the appliance unplugged. If it holds, the trouble is inside the appliance. If it trips with nothing plugged in, it's the wiring or the breaker itself. 3. Note what the appliance was doing when it tripped, whether it was heating, spinning, filling, or defrosting. That timing narrows things down a lot. 4. Check whether anything else shares the circuit. A space heater and a freezer on the same line will trip a breaker all day long. 5. Leave it off and call us.
What not to do, even once more
Don't keep resetting it. Each reset sends full current back into whatever is faulting, and that's how a small short turns into scorched wire. Don't tape, wedge, or hold a breaker in the on position. Don't put in a bigger breaker to make the tripping stop, because the breaker is sized for the wire behind the wall, not for the appliance. Skip extension cords and power strips on big appliances entirely. Leave the electrical panel cover alone. Don't open the back of a dryer, washer, or microwave either; some parts hold a charge long after you unplug them. Around here, a damp basement floor makes all of that worse.
When to stop and get out
Some signs mean you make the phone call from outside. Smoke, or a burning plastic smell that lingers after you unplug. Scorch marks or melted plastic at an outlet or cord. Buzzing or crackling from the wall or the panel. An outlet or cover plate that's hot to the touch. Sparks when you plug something in. A shock from a metal appliance case, even a small tingle. In those cases, shut off the main breaker if you can reach it safely and dry, get out, and call the fire department. If you smell gas near a dryer or range, don't touch any switch at all. Go outside and call the gas utility.
Us or the utility company?
Call your electric utility if the whole house flickers, if lights dim and brighten on their own, if the trouble started after a storm or a tree hit the line, or if the damage is out at the meter or the service drop. That side is theirs. Call a licensed electrician for panel work, for dead outlets with no appliance attached, or for old wiring in a 1920s bungalow. Call us when the appliance is what sets it off: a dryer heating element gone to ground, a washer motor pulling too much, a fridge compressor struggling, a dishwasher heater sitting in water where water shouldn't be.

We start with the same test you ran, then keep going. We measure current draw while the appliance runs, and we check resistance to ground on heating elements and motors. On dryers we look at the element, the terminal block, and the cord, since those burn at the connections. Washers and dishwashers get a moisture check first. Water tracking into a motor or heater is common in Portland laundry rooms and basements. Ranges get an element and receptacle inspection. We work unplugged, discharge whatever needs discharging, and tell you plainly whether you're looking at a part, a cord, or a job for an electrician.

Is a GFCI outlet tripping the same as a breaker tripping?
No. A GFCI trips on a small amount of current leaking to ground, often from moisture. A breaker trips on overload or a short. GFCIs tripping over and over in a damp basement usually means water is getting somewhere it shouldn't.
Can I run the appliance on an extension cord to another outlet?
Please don't. Large appliances pull more than cords are built for, and the cord heats up before anything trips. If a different circuit trips too, you've confirmed the appliance is the problem, but you took a real risk to learn it.
The breaker only trips sometimes. Is it still a problem?
Yes. Intermittent trips usually mean a part fails only when it's hot, wet, or under load. It won't heal itself, and it tends to get worse. Have it looked at while the diagnosis is still easy.
