What a clogged filter quietly does over the years
The filter catches food bits so they don't get sprayed back onto your dishes. When it packs solid, water can't drain through it fast. So the pump works against a wall of sludge. Wash water gets dirtier every cycle and re-deposits a fine film on glasses. That's the cloudy look people blame on hard water. Standing water sits in the sump between runs and grows the sour smell. Over a couple of years, grease and paper labels and seeds pack into the fine mesh and harden. Then the drain motor strains, the heater struggles to bring dirty water up to temperature, and cycles run long.
The five-minute habit that prevents all of it
Open the door and pull out the lower rack. Look at the tub floor. In most machines you'll see a round cylinder filter that twists a quarter turn counterclockwise and lifts straight out. Under it sits a flat mesh screen that usually lifts out too. Take both to the sink. Rinse under warm water. Use an old toothbrush and a drop of dish soap on the mesh. Don't use a wire brush, it'll tear the screen. Wipe the empty well with a paper towel and grab anything solid, glass chips, a popcorn kernel, a twist tie. Drop the parts back in and twist until they seat. That's it.
How often, honestly
Once a month covers most households. If you're a family of four running the machine daily, make it every two weeks. If it's just two of you running it twice a week, every six weeks is fine. Set a reminder on your phone the same day you change the furnace filter, so it rides along with something you already do. Scraping plates helps, but don't count on it to replace cleaning. Grease still goes in. In our damp Portland winters, dishwashers sit shut for long stretches between loads, and a dirty filter in a closed tub sours faster than most people expect.
Signs prevention already passed you by
Water standing in the bottom of the tub the morning after a cycle is the clearest one. A film you can scratch off glassware with a fingernail is another. Listen too. A drain pump straining against debris makes a higher, grinding whine at the end of the cycle instead of a smooth hum. If the door seal smells even after you clean the filter, sludge may have moved past the screen into the drain hose or sump. Chunks landing on the top rack means the spray arm ports are plugged as well. At that point cleaning alone won't reset it and something needs to come apart.

Does my dishwasher even have a removable filter?
Most machines built in the last fifteen or so years do. Older ones often used a grinder instead. Look at the tub floor under the lower rack for a cylinder with a twist arrow. If there's no cylinder, check your manual.
Can I put the filter in the dishwasher to clean it?
No. It needs mechanical scrubbing under running water to release trapped grease. Running it in place just recirculates the same debris. Hand rinse with warm water and a soft brush, then seat it back firmly.
Will a cleaner tablet fix the smell instead?
A tablet helps with film and mineral scale, but it won't lift packed food from the mesh. Clean the filter first, then run the cleaner. Doing it in that order actually gets you somewhere.
