Dishwasher Repair or Replace

We repair dishwashers that won't drain, won't clean, leak, or won't start, and we'll tell you honestly when the machine isn't worth the parts. Give us a call and we'll come look. But the question behind the question is usually whether to fix it or haul it out and buy new, and that deserves a straight answer. Here's how we think it through when we're standing in front of the machine with you.

Age is the first thing we look at

Most dishwashers give good service for around ten years. Some go longer, especially if they've been run with soft water and cleaned now and then. Under about seven years, repair usually makes sense, since the tub, racks, and door are still solid. Past twelve years we get more careful. Not because the machine is doomed, but because one worn part often means others are close behind. We'll tell you what we see. Rusted rack tines, a cracked sump, a door seal gone hard and flaky, those say the whole machine is tired rather than one piece of it.

The fault type matters more than the age

A dishwasher that won't drain is often a clogged filter, a jammed drain pump, or a kinked hose. Those are common and straightforward. Same with a broken door latch, a leaking inlet valve, or a heating element that quit. Dishes coming out dirty usually traces back to a spray arm, the wash pump, or hard water buildup. Where we slow down is a cracked inner tub, or a leak coming from the tub seam itself. Water inside the cabinet base means the leak has been going a while, and the floor underneath may need attention too. That's a different conversation.

Whether the parts still exist

This is the quiet one people forget. A control board for a discontinued model can be hard to source, or gone entirely. Some older Euro models used assemblies nobody stocks anymore. We check availability before we recommend anything. If the part sits on a shelf somewhere and ships in a few days, great. If we're hunting salvage boards with no idea what condition they're in, we'll say so plainly. There's no sense putting an uncertain used part into a machine you rely on every night. In that case replacement is the calmer path, and we'll tell you that.

How the visit actually goes

We start by listening. What did it do, when did it start, does it happen every cycle or only some of them. Then we run it and watch. Fill, wash, drain, each stage tells us something. We pull the filter and look at the sump. We check under the unit for old water stains and look at how the drain hose is routed. Once we know the fault, we talk it through with you before we do anything. You hear what's wrong, what it takes to fix, and what we'd do if it were our kitchen. No pressure either direction. Give us a call and we'll come take a look.

When we say replace it

There are honest cases. A cracked tub on an older machine. A failed control board nobody can source. Several systems tired at the same time, so the pump is noisy, the seal is hard, and the racks are rusting through. Or a builder-grade unit that was thin to begin with and has already been repaired twice. Here in Portland we also see machines that sat in damp basements or under a leaky sink for years, where corrosion runs deeper than any one part. When there are more problems than solutions, we'd rather you spend on a new one than on us. We'll say it directly.

Dishwasher Repair or Replace — quick answers

My dishwasher leaves white film on everything. Is that a repair?

Often not. Hard water and low rinse aid cause most film. Run a dishwasher cleaner through it and refill the rinse aid dispenser first. If the film hangs on across several cycles, a weak wash pump or a blocked spray arm may be involved.

Is it worth repairing a dishwasher that's twelve years old?

Sometimes. A simple drain pump or door latch on an otherwise clean machine can be worth doing. A control board or a cracked tub at that age usually isn't. We look at the specific fault, not just the birthday.

Can I keep using it while it waits for a part?

Depends on the fault. If it leaks, no. Shut off the supply and leave it alone. If it just won't dry or it's noisy, usually yes. Ask us when we diagnose it and we'll tell you straight.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call us or fill out the form and describe what you're hearing, seeing or smelling. Brand and rough age help. We ask a few questions up front so the likely parts ride along in the van.

  2. Step 2

    We come look

A technician shows up in the window we set, pulls the unit out and tests it. Tight basement stairs and low bungalow ceilings are ordinary to us. You'll hear what's wrong before anything gets replaced.

  3. Step 3

    You decide, we repair

We walk you through the fix and what it involves, then wait for your go-ahead. Most common parts are already on the truck. If something has to be ordered, we tell you the plan and follow up.

Why homeowners call us

  • Damp-house know-howPortland laundry rooms grow mildew and basements stay wet. We know what moisture does to dryer vents, washer parts and control boards, so before we call a repair done we look at the room around the machine too.
  • Unhurried visitsA rushed diagnostic misses things. We take the extra minutes to pull the panel, look behind the drum and test the drain line. Then we tell you plainly what failed and whether fixing it makes sense on that appliance.
  • Every major brandWe're an independent shop, so the whole kitchen and laundry room is fair game: washers, dryers, refrigerators, ranges, ovens, dishwashers, freezers and disposals. A twenty-year-old unit gets the same careful look as a new digital one.
  • Wide service reachHomeowners in five Western states reach us the same way. City bungalow, suburban split-level, a house down a gravel road. We set a visit and arrive with tools and common parts ready.
  • All major brands, gas & electricOne independent crew for Whirlpool, Samsung, GE, LG, Maytag, Bosch and more.
  • Straight answersWhen a repair doesn't make sense, we tell you, sometimes before we even roll a truck.
