What "not cleaning" is actually telling you
A dishwasher needs three things working together: hot water, water moving with force, and detergent that dissolves. Take away any one and you get dirty dishes. So the film or crust on your plates is a clue about which one failed. Chalky white haze usually points at hard water and rinse aid. Gritty sand-like specks point at the filter or drain. Food stuck only on the top rack points at spray arm flow. Baked-on residue everywhere often means the water never got hot enough. Look at your dishes before you look at the machine. The pattern narrows things down fast.
Cause family one: loading, detergent, and old habits
This is the cheapest fix and it solves a lot of calls. Overlapping plates block spray. Big mixing bowls face-down over the center create a shadow where nothing gets wet. Tall pot handles stop the upper spray arm from spinning. Detergent matters too — pods stored in a damp Portland laundry room or under-sink cabinet can clump and stop dissolving. Old powder goes stale. Skipping rinse aid leaves that cloudy film people mistake for a broken machine. Try one load loaded loosely, fresh detergent, rinse aid topped off, and the hot tap run at the sink first. Sometimes that's the whole repair.
Cause family two: the filter, sump, and drain
Most modern dishwashers have a removable cylinder filter in the floor. Food sludge builds there, and then dirty water gets sprayed back onto clean dishes. Pull the bottom rack out and twist the filter free — it's designed for hand removal, no tools. Rinse it under the faucet with a soft brush. Check the shallow sump underneath for glass chips, fruit stickers, and toothpicks. Also look at the air gap or the loop under your sink; a partly clogged drain line leaves standing water that stinks and re-soils everything. If water sits in the tub after a cycle, mention that when you call. That changes what we bring.
Cause family three: spray arms and water delivery
Spin each spray arm by hand. It should turn freely. Hold one up to the light and check the little jet holes — mineral scale and seeds plug them, and our regional water leaves deposits. Many arms unclip or unscrew by hand for a rinse. If the upper rack has a feed tube at the back, check that it isn't cracked or knocked loose. When arms are clean and still nothing gets clean, the problem is usually pressure: a tired wash pump, a worn impeller, or a clogged inlet screen. That's ours to test, not yours. Don't remove panels or reach into the machine's underside.

Scrape, don't rinse. Modern detergent needs some soil to work against. But get rid of bones, corn silk, and stickers — those are what plug filters and spray holes in the first place.
Why are my glasses cloudy instead of dirty?
That's usually mineral film, not food. Add rinse aid, use a dishwasher cleaner made for scale, and check your water hardness. If etching feels rough and permanent, the glass itself may be damaged.
Does running the hot tap first really help?
Yes. It clears cooled water from the pipe so the dishwasher's first fill is hot. Cold first fill means detergent doesn't dissolve well, and some cycles never fully recover the heat.
