What "not cleaning" is actually telling you
A dishwasher needs hot water, water moving with real force, and detergent that dissolves. Lose one of those and you get dirty dishes. The film or crust left behind tells you which one quit. Chalky white haze usually points at hard water and rinse aid. Gritty sand-like specks point at the filter or drain, while food stuck only on the top rack points at spray arm flow. Baked-on residue on everything often means the water never got hot enough. Look at your dishes before you look at the machine. The pattern narrows it down fast.
Cause family one: loading, detergent, and old habits
This is the cheapest fix, and it settles a lot of calls. Overlapping plates block spray. A big mixing bowl face-down over the center creates a shadow where nothing gets wet, and tall pot handles stop the upper spray arm from spinning. Detergent matters too. Pods stored in a damp Portland laundry room or under-sink cabinet clump up and quit dissolving, and old powder goes stale. Skip rinse aid and you get that cloudy film people mistake for a broken machine. Run one load packed loosely, with fresh detergent, rinse aid topped off, and the hot tap run at the sink first. Sometimes that's the whole repair.
Cause family two: the filter, sump, and drain
Most modern dishwashers have a removable cylinder filter down in the floor. Food sludge builds up there, and then dirty water gets sprayed back onto clean dishes. Pull the bottom rack out and twist the filter free. It's made for hand removal, no tools. Rinse it under the faucet with a soft brush, then check the shallow sump underneath for glass chips, fruit stickers, and toothpicks. Look at the air gap or the loop under your sink as well; a partly clogged drain line leaves standing water that stinks and re-soils everything. If water sits in the tub after a cycle, say so when you call. That changes what we bring.
Cause family three: spray arms and water delivery
Spin each spray arm by hand. It should turn freely. Hold one up to the light and look at the little jet holes, since mineral scale and seeds plug them and our regional water leaves deposits. Many arms unclip or unscrew by hand for a rinse. If the upper rack has a feed tube at the back, make sure it isn't cracked or knocked loose. When the arms are clean and dishes still come out dirty, it's usually pressure: a tired wash pump, a worn impeller, or a clogged inlet screen. That part is ours to test, not yours. Leave the panels on and keep your hands out from under the machine.

We measure incoming water temperature and how much water actually fills the tub, because a weak fill valve looks just like a weak pump from the outside. We test the heating element and thermistor for resistance, check the diverter valve that alternates upper and lower spray, and read stored fault codes. Should I rinse dishes before loading?
Scrape, don't rinse. Modern detergent needs some soil to work against. Do get rid of bones, corn silk, and stickers, since those are what plug filters and spray holes in the first place.
Why are my glasses cloudy instead of dirty?
That's usually mineral film rather than food. Add rinse aid, use a dishwasher cleaner made for scale, and check your water hardness. If the etching feels rough and won't come off, the glass itself may be damaged.
Does running the hot tap first really help?
Yes. It clears cooled water out of the pipe so the dishwasher's first fill comes in hot. A cold first fill means detergent doesn't dissolve well, and some cycles never fully make up the heat.
